Substance Use Treatment & Recovery in Florida
As the country remains in the grip of one of the worst drug crises in the history of the United States, with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reporting 115 people dying every day from opioid overdoses alone, now more than ever, effective substance abuse and addiction recovery treatment is critical.
As history tends to repeat itself, much like the addiction landscape of today, there was a huge spike in recreational drug use and substance abuse issues throughout the 1970s and 80s. The major difference though, was that there was much less in the way of available recovery treatment options.
In response to an overwhelming demand for effective substance abuse treatment, many people in recovery from drugs or alcohol went south and opened their own facilities for substance abuse treatment and recovery in Florida.

The state of Florida became a popular destination for people seeking addiction treatment for many of the same reasons it was a desirable spot for vacationers: warm days, sunny skies, and sandy beaches. These characteristics promoted a sense of relaxation and calm, as well as a positive frame of mind, unlike the seasonal affective disorder that can many people suffer from during the cold, grey winters in the Northeast.
As time has gone on, the explosion of addiction treatment centers in Florida has led to a massive recovery community and is informally known as the recovery capital of the United States, in part because many people who travel to Florida for addiction recovery end up falling in love with the area and moving here permanently. This also means that Florida has one of the largest networks of support available for those in recovery from substance use disorders.
Today, Florida remains one of the premier destinations for the highest standard of substance abuse treatment and recovery programs. Over time, treatment centers in Florida have developed their own unique ways of effectively treating patients that has become known as the Florida Model.
Substance Abuse and the Opioid Crisis in Florida
Unfortunately, Florida is not immune from the marked increase in substance abuse and overdose deaths that have affected the country in recent years, including the opioid epidemic that has swept across the entirety of the United States.
One side effect of being the recovery capital of the country is that there are many people struggling with substance use disorders who have since relapsed after treatment and gone back to using. As such, the state of Florida is currently above the national average for general drug-related deaths.
According to the Florida Medical Examiner’s Office, 2016 saw a total of almost 12,000 drug-related deaths, with about 61 percent a result of prescription medication abuse. Even drugs that have been on the decline nationally have started to make a comeback, including cocaine, which was responsible for almost 2,000 deaths in 2015.
According to NIDA, 3,000 of the overdose deaths in 2016 in Florida were a result of opioid addiction, which translates to an adjusted rate of 14 percent, as compared to the national average rate of opioid overdose deaths, which is about 13 percent.
That same year, there were more than 1,500 deaths relating to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, compared to 200 deaths just three years prior. That’s a staggering 683 percent increase that, unfortunately, is mirrored throughout the majority of the country as well.
But there is hope. In response, substance abuse researchers and professionals are dedicated to learning more about the treatment of drug and alcohol use disorders every day, and as more information becomes available and addiction recovery medication and technology become more advanced, more positive changes in addiction recovery treatment are soon to follow.
Florida itself is one of the leaders in addiction treatment and recovery in the United States, pioneering the Florida Model of addiction treatment, which is the leading method of substance abuse treatment throughout the country. It has since been implemented far and wide into the curriculums of addiction treatment facilities.
What Is Substance Abuse Treatment?
Substance abuse treatment is about treating every aspect of someone’s addiction, including both the physical and psychological aspects. Clients have the drugs or alcohol flushed from their systems during detox and are carefully monitored by an experienced detox medical team as they go through the process of withdrawal. When someone begins their addiction recovery treatment program, they will start at the highest level of care and slowly progress to less intensive treatment modes, which include, depending on the needs of a given individual:
- substance detoxification
- inpatient or residential care
- partial hospitalization program
- intensive outpatient care
- outpatient program
- post-treatment maintenance
Within these modes of care are a variety of different addiction therapies and services that are intended to provide clients with guidance, support, and education as they work to understand and manage their addictions. Some of these include:
- Case and care management
- Individual counseling
- Group counseling
- Family therapy
- Holistic therapy
- Addiction education workshops
- Medication management
- 12-step programs
- Aftercare recovery services
The Florida Model of Addiction Treatment
As we previously mentioned, there is a unique style of Florida substance abuse treatment that is commonly referred to as the Florida Model. There are several things that make the Florida Model distinct from other methods of substance abuse treatment.
Typically, those attending an inpatient addiction recovery treatment center are housed in facilities that can have the feeling of a hospital or institution wherein all of its services are offered under one roof. They generally do not, however, offer much in the way of individual-based amenities such as kitchens and laundry facilities.
Addiction recovery treatment centers that follow the Florida Model, on the other hand, instead feature a more college campus type of setting, with different elements of the treatment programs housed in different buildings that clients will travel between.
Inpatient housing is separate from where they receive treatment services such as counseling or medical maintenance therapy and generally also offers a wider range of amenities, styled as dormitories or apartments with kitchens, laundry, common areas, bathrooms, and even patios.
This is for more than just comfort, however. Providing clients with these amenities and living spaces allows them to learn how to properly maintain a clean and organized living space and slowly build back their sense of personal responsibility for an easier transition back to normal life once treatment is over.
The Florida Model also places a good deal of importance on the client working on many other key life skills as they progress through their treatment, including nutrition education, grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, keeping track of personal finances, and more. These may seem like small things, but getting on track with these basic personal tasks can serve as the building blocks to mastering bigger and more complex life skills.
it's just a call away!
Of course, this is all done in addition to the core elements of every effective substance abuse recovery treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, counseling, group therapy, 12-step programs, addiction education workshops, and more.
What to Look for in a Substance Abuse Treatment Program
When looking for a substance abuse treatment and recovery in Florida, or anywhere for that matter, there are several key things that are important to keep in mind, first and foremost is that addiction recovery is not a one-size-fits-all situation. What works for one person may not be effective for another, and when looking for a treatment center, some will be able to meet your specific needs better than others.
When attempting to sort between the multitude of Florida substance abuse treatment centers, you can rely on the specific criteria for an effective treatment center as set by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA). Their treatment center criteria are as follows:
Accreditation is of the utmost importance. A reputable treatment facility needs to have all of the specific licenses and certifications to be able to operate. In order to receive these various accreditations, they must meet very strict standards of operation so that you can be assured of the level of quality control.
Not all therapeutic treatments and practices are created equal. Some approaches to addiction recovery treatment have been proven to be effective through the addiction research and science community and among clients. You will definitely want a treatment center that employs evidence-based treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, for example.
Medication-assisted treatment and medication management can be crucial factors in many people’s addiction treatment program and necessary for them to successfully recover. Because of this, it’s important to know what the protocol on medication management is when it comes to a potential treatment center. Not all facilities will necessarily include medication-assisted treatment or medical maintenance therapy.
Having the support of your family and other loved ones during your addiction recovery treatment has been proven to increase the chances of a successful treatment. However, not all facilities offer family recovery programs or even give clients direct access to their loved ones for the duration of their treatment.
Managing addiction is a lifelong task, and recovery does not end after you have completed your recovery treatment program. Because of this, it’s important to be aware of what kind of post-treatment support options a potential treatment center is able to offer once you have completed the program. Even the most effective addiction treatment can fall apart without follow-up support like alumni services or group meetings.
